Special Events and mosquitoes and ticks are not a winning combination!

Special Events and mosquitoes and ticks are not a winning combination!

Planning an outdoor wedding, reception, graduation, anniversary, or even a children’s birthday celebration requires a lot of work! You want the day to go off without any disasters or complications. So you carefully line up the perfect foods and drinks, seating arrangements, decorations, and party favors. We’d like to remind you of another thing to put on your to do list: set up a Special Event Barrier Spray session with Mosquito Squad. Being One With Nature

Part of the joy of having an event outside is the pleasure of being surrounded by nature. The beauty and movement of the fields and flowers are a delight to the eye. The sounds of birds, crickets, and even the wind rustling in the branches add breadth to the space. According to the National Wildlife Federation, being out in Nature has many added benefits including:

  • increased Vitamin D is not only good for your bones, but good for your heart
  • people are nicer when in nature: more caring socially and as a community
  • stress levels fall within minutes of simply seeing green spaces

Our service enables you to renew your love of the outdoors and being at one with nature!

There are many benefits associated with spending time outdoors!

There are many benefits associated with spending time outdoors!

One of the most beneficial aspects of being able to enjoy your backyard mosquito and tick free is freedom; the  freedom of placing yourself at one with nature anytime. Being “in” nature has proven positive effects including an increase in health, happiness, wealth, a better sense of community, an improved state of mind and even increases a child’s ability to learn!

According to an article published by the Harvard Health Letter through the Harvard Medical School titled “A prescription for better health: go alfresco”, the simple act of spending time outdoors is loaded with mental and physical benefits. One of the listed benefits includes an increase in your level of Vitamin D.  Being exposed to sunlight  begins a process that leads to the creation and activation of vitamin D. Studies suggest that this vitamin D helps fight certain conditions,  including Osteoporosis, Cancer, depression and heart attacks. A lack of vitamin D, and not getting outdoors often is a driving force for what we refer to as “cabin fever”, and even the “rainy day blues.”

It is human nature to become more active when outside because there is so much to see, and experience in nature.

It is human nature to become more active when outside because there is so much to see, and experience in nature.

Another benefit of getting outdoors is it gets you up and at em’! Outdoor living increases physical activity. It is human nature to become more active when outside because there is so much to see, and experience in nature. It is true that many adults exercise “within” the settings of a gym or on the treadmill at home but children are the ones who generally miss out on the many benefits of being outdoors. Indoor living has long been associated with being sedentary, particularly for children, while being outdoors is associated with activity. According to some surveys, American children spend an average of 6+ hours a day with electronic media (video games, television, and so on), time that is spent mainly indoors and sitting down. British researchers used Global Positioning System devices and accelerometers, which sense movement, to track the activity of 1,000 children. They found that the children were more than doubly active when they were outside. By encouraging children to get outside, especially though setting an example, this will mean less time spent in front of the television and computer and more time walking, biking, gardening, cleaning up the yard, and doing other things that get kids moving — plus, the time spent outdoors with your child are the times they will cherish!

Did you know that light can help elevate your mood? It’s true, and getting outside and enjoying the sun is one of the best ways to treat conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder. Physical activity has been shown to relax and cheer people up too, so if being outside replaces inactive pursuits with active ones, it might also mean more smiles and laughter.

Mother Nature holds the power of healing.

Mother Nature holds the power of healing.

Not only will experiencing the outdoors increase concentration, but a recent  story discusses how outdoor play in children is increasingly linked scientifically to stronger mental muscle. The article, titled “Does outdoor play make kids smarter?” was featured on the Children and Nature Network website and points out that “Parents have long thought of outdoor play as the icing on the cognitive cake: Finish your homework, attend to all of the after-school lessons and clubs intended to gain you admission to Stanford or Cal, and then, and only then, can you go out and play. A growing body of research, however, suggests that outdoor play offers such a positive bump in brain power, it should perhaps be a priority. One school of thought about why nature has such an effect is the attention restoration theory: If you want to gain strength by lifting weights, you need to take a break between sessions for your muscles to recover; nature provides a similar break in attention for your brain. The other theory, “is biophilia: This is what my brain was built for. Our brains evolved in nature. Now that we have light bulbs and iPads, nature has a calming effect. MRI tests confirm that nature produces chemical shifts in the brain.”

And last , but certainly not least, fresh air, nature and exposure to natural sunlight has been proven to help us heal faster from injuries, illness and surgery. University of Pittsburgh researchers reported in 2005 that spinal surgery patients experienced less pain and stress and took fewer pain medications during their recoveries if they were exposed to natural light. An older study showed that the view out the window (trees vs. a brick wall) had an effect on patient recovery. Of course, windows and views are different than actually being outside, but we’re betting that adding a little fresh air to the equation couldn’t hurt and might help.

Mosquito free life

The desire to spend time outdoors is natural to us. It puts things in perspective. Even after a long, hard week at work or school, stepping into nature gives us solace and is as good for our soul as it is for our health, and mood. At Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery, our goal is to create a space that enables you the freedom to be outdoors spontaneously. We create backyards that allow you and your family the endless benefits of Mother Nature without the worry of mosquitoes or ticks.

Learn how to keep mosquitoes and ticks away for Labor Day — and your special day!

Happy Labor Day from Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery!

Happy Labor Day from Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery!

The last hoorah for summer is right around the corner as residents and communities all over Montgomery County, MD plan their annual Labor Day festivities. With this holiday upon us, many households will be hosting backyard celebrations. All the preparations, guest lists and planning you are working on should also include mosquito and tick control and prevention. Outdoor parties are an important time to make certain that you and your guests don’t get bitten while attending your special event.

Mosquitoes and ticks are vectors for illness and disease, such as Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus just to name a few. Don’t put you or the health of your guests at risk. Even though fall  is right around the corner, and you may feel that summer is coming to an end, we are actually in the height of mosquito and tick season. Now it is more important than ever to stay focused and keep your property protected from mosquitoes and ticks.

Special events are an important time to make certain that you and your guests don’t get bitten while attending your special event.

Special events are an important time to make certain that you and your guests don’t get bitten.

We are  still receiving requests for our special event mosquito and tick control services as Maryland homeowners prepare to host other special outdoor events such as weddings, family reunions and birthday parties. Many of these events are larger in size than your average backyard barbecue and seating accommodations are sometimes placed near taller grasses or back up to the edges of your property or wooded areas. In these scenarios, it is crucial to treat your property to kill ticks as well as mosquitoes, since high grass and bushes are where ticks like to hide and tick activity peaks late summer into early fall.

Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery can help you and your family enjoy the remainder of the outdoor living season in your yard without the threat of being bitten. Even though the kids are back in school and vacations have come to an end, there is no reason you can’t enjoy the long afternoons outside with your family and friends. Anytime can be special, even the smallest moments.

Kensington residents know they have a giant mosquito problem ( just look at the picture!) Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery will be participating in the annual parade again this year. Our participation in local and community events is an important part of teaching our neighbors the importance of mosquito and tick control in their own backyard as a way to reduce the risk of vector-borne illness and as a way to make the the time spent outdoors safer and more enjoyable for every member of the family, including pets.

Both mosquitoes and ticks are capable of infecting us with illnesses like West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease and can even infect our beloved pets with heartworms, Eastern Equine Encephalitis and Canine Lyme Disease.  Our mission here at Mosquito Squad is simple: to educate you about the risks of vector-borne illness and how enjoy the outdoors without the worries! We can even keep those dreaded stink bugs away too!

Chikungunya Is Spreading Like Wildfire!

ChikungunyaChikungunya isn’t a new Caribbean dish discovered this summer by vacationers to the Islands.  It IS being brought back to the US though.  Twenty-four states have so far reported 88 cases of this mosquito-borne disease.  The first case of Chikungunya in the Caribbean was reported in December 2013.  The CDC currently reports there are more than 183,000 cases in the Western Hemisphere.  It is spreading like a proverbial wildfire.

The disease had previously remained in Africa, the Pacific Islands and Asia until December when the Caribbean nation of St. Martin’s reported the first case.  Chikungunya comes from a language in Tanzania meaning “bent over”.  Symptoms of the disease include fever, headaches and joint pain.  Symptoms occur within 3-7 days of an infected mosquito bite.  After a week, the symptoms usually disappear; however, some victims are not so lucky.  The arthritic-like joint pain of the disease can linger for some for months or years.  Medication can be prescribed for the pain but there is no treatment for the illness.  Fortunately, the disease is rarely fatal.

chikungunya-transmission-cycleAlthough, no local transmissions from humans to mosquitoes have occurred in the US, CDC scientists believe it is only a matter of time before isolated outbreaks will occur here.  So far, all of the US victims of Chikungunya acquired the disease during visits to the Caribbean.

The two species of mosquitoes that transmit this disease have been in the US for a number of years.  With our increasingly warmer climate, both species can now be found as far north as Rhode Island.  These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime feeders.  They do not primarily look for a blood meal at dusk and dawn like other mosquito species.

Since this is summer traveling season, many US vacationers will plan to enjoy the sun and surf of the Caribbean.  You can’t know whether a returning neighbor or family member from a Caribbean vacation will be the next Chikungunya case in the US.  The best way anyone has of preventing mosquito-borne illnesses to themselves and loved ones is to prevent being bitten by a mosquito.  Since you likely spend most of your time outdoors in your yard, there is an effective way to reduce the number of bites you and your family may receive this summer.

Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery MD provides an effective and proven barrier spray that eliminates 85-90% of the mosquitoes in your yard throughout the season.  We will also help you mosquito-proof your yard by pointing out places mosquitoes like to breed and hide, like rain gutters clogged with organic debris, flowerpots with standing water, etc.  Prior to treating your yard, we will confirm that we are on our way.  We will also leave you a notice that your yard was treated.  For continued protection all summer long, we recommend you treat your yard every 3 weeks during mosquito season.  With 4th of July around the corner, this would be an excellent time for you to experience the effectiveness of our barrier spray and judge for yourself.

Mosquitoes put your loved ones at risk of catching more than the bouquet at your wedding!

The uninvited guest: the mosquito

The uninvited guest: the mosquito.

Most of us don’t like being unprepared when we leave our house.  Going into a movie or restaurant that’s freezing cold in the summer is an annoyance.  Who thinks of bringing a sweater or jacket with them in July to go grocery shopping?  These are unpleasant situations we can endure briefly and either get our food to-go or grab the essential groceries we need and leave as soon as possible.

Getting the family ready to visit their Grandfather on Father’s Day, attending a Little League cookout, visiting friends for a pool party, even attending a friend’s wedding are some of the activities we might be doing this summer.  If we’re the host of these events, we will plan the food and drinks, the activities we need to provide to entertain everyone, what we will wear and all the things to make the day fun and enjoyable.  We want everyone to take away good memories.

After being indoors most of the winter, we often don’t think about what happens as the weather moves from early spring to summer.  How often have you hosted an outdoor event only to forget about mosquitoes?  We often don’t remember how quickly a tiny insect became the most important memory we took away from an outdoor event we attended.  Planning how you will prevent mosquitoes from ruining your event is just one more thing to include on your event To-Do List.  It will be as if all of our hard work meant nothing if you allow mosquitoes to invade your festivities.

Let’s imagine a bride’s wedding day.  Everything has been planned for months.  The cake has arrived on time.  Guests have traveled from far and wide to attend this special event.  Photos have been taken on the beautiful white bridge with lush green trees in the background to show off the bride’s amazing gown.  The bride and groom can think of nothing other than their future together and the new chapter beginning in their lives.  Watch this short movie, and see how their special day unfolds.

After looking at this brief movie, you probably have a better feeling of how biting mosquitoes can turn a planned celebration into a survival event.  Mosquito Squad of West Montgomery MD wants you to know it doesn’t have to be that way.  We offer a one-time event barrier spray to eliminate mosquitoes at any of your special gatherings.  Weddings, Anniversaries, Family Reunions, Birthday Parties, Cookouts, any event you are planning outdoors.

Enjoy the outdoor living season mosquito and worry free!

Enjoy the outdoor living season mosquito and worry free!

How many times have you failed to think of bug spray, anti-itch cream, etc. while getting dressed for any of these events?  Most of us don’t think of them often and neither will your guests.  Last week, while attending a Boy Scout cookout with my sons, one of them began itching and scratching from mosquito bites.  We had to leave to get anti-itch spray.  By the time we returned, we missed half the banquet.  Even someone working in the mosquito business can forget about mosquitoes when focused on children and the celebration they are attending.  It’s easy for any of us to forget how bad mosquitoes can be, especially around lakes and areas with a lot of shade and cover.

the bloodthirsty asian tiger mosquito

The bloodthirsty asian tiger mosquito is just one of over 59 species of mosquito here in MD.

A mosquito barrier spray will make sure that whether your guests remember sprays or creams, they will enjoy their time at your special event.  Our mosquito barrier sprays are so effective many of our one-time event customers later become regular customers.  The effectiveness of our mosquito treatments are our best advertisement and a great way to be introduced to them.  Once applied, no one will know the spray was used.  What guests may eventually notice is that there are no mosquitoes bothering them.

From the time your guests leave their car until they return, our mosquito barrier spray can be protecting them.  Our technicians call before arriving at the event location and will spray a day or two before your event to begin eliminating mosquitoes in advance of your festivities.  Whether you are using your backyard, or a space you’ve rented, we can make sure the only memories your guests take home are the ones you want them to have.  In fact, many of your friends and guests may tell you after your event that they were surprised they didn’t see any mosquitoes.  Of course, if you want them to think you picked a bug-free location for their enjoyment, we won’t tell.  It’s up to you.
